Tottenham are ready to swap midfielder Christian Eriksen for long-term transfer target Paulo Dybala in the upcoming January transfer window, as per news in Italy

Dybala, 25, attracted a tug-of-war for his services this summer as both Manchester United and Tottenham negotiated with Juventus to try and bring the striker to England.

Both clubs were in advanced negotiations to sign the striker but were put away by his £ 350,000-a-week wage demands and issues surrounding his image rights.

However, if Tuttosport is to be believed, the English side haven’t accepted defeat in their chase of the Argentine, with Mauricio Pochettino ready to use Christian Eriksen as a make-shift in the deal that would see the 25-year-old signing for Tottenham.

The report further claims that if Spurs are to have their way, they would try and complete the transfer in the upcoming January transfer window.

Despite being a key member of the squad which made it to the  UEFA Champions League final last season, Christian Eriksen is unhappy with his situation at Tottenham.

With only a year remaining on his contract, Erkisen, 27, made it clear in the summer that he was looking for a fresh challenge, with both Juventus and Real Madrid waiting for him in the shadows.

“I wish I could decide myself, like you can do in the [computer game] Football Manager, but I can’t do that sadly.” said Eriksen in an attempt to explain his displeasure over his current situation at the club.

I don’t think it was wrong [to say that it was time for a new challenge]. But this is football and you never know what happens in football. A lot of things play a part.”

If Tottenham aren’t able to convince Eriksen to tie his long-term future with the club, the Dan will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with other clubs in January.

Assuming Tottenham are able to bring-in Dybala on a swap deal in January, it will be a major coup on the part of the North London outfit – though they won’t be the only side benefiting from the deal.

Dybala was unhappy at the role given to him by Massimiliano Allegri during the latter’s last season as Juventus manager. With the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo from Spain, the former Juventus manager didn’t provide the Argentine with as much game time as he would have wanted. The uncertainty over his position in the team affected Dybala’s form as he scored only 10 goals last season despite managing more than 20 a season before.

While the 25-year-old was hoping that the arrival of new manager Maurizio Sarri would allow him more game time, that hasn’t happened. With Gonzalo Higuain and Douglas Costa above him in the pecking order, Dybala has started both of Juventus’ Serie A games from the bench.

Tottenham might not be able to pay him the wages which he is currently earning at Juventus but they could guarantee him the game time which Dybala isn’t getting at the Turin Stadium. With Christian Eriksen also itching for a move away from England, the deal would make sense for all parties involved.

Still, as the representatives of Dybala showed while negotiating with both Manchester United and Tottenham earlier this summer, it won’t be easy for Spurs to pluck the Argentine away from Turin.
