Trio earn first England call-ups, Roma edging closer to Smalling move and Tottenham get injury boost

After violating coronavirus protocols during the previous international break, Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden have both been left out of the squad.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Harvey Barnes and Bukayo Saka have earned their first call-ups for the England senior side, while Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood have been left out.

Calvert-Lewin score a career-high 15 goals for Everton last term and has started the season in stunning fashion to help the Toffees get three wins from three in the Premier League. The 23-year-old has already scored five PL goals for Carlo Ancelotti’s side and is currently the joint-leading goalscorer.

Saka, 19, enjoyed a spectacular campaign in the 2019/20 season while playing for Arsenal in the left-back position.  The young full-back hasn’t been able to replace Kieran Tierney so far this season but has still been nominated in the senior England side by manager Gareth Southgate.

Leicester City forward Harvey Barnes is the final of the three players who might make their debut for the senior side over the next fortnight. The 22-year-old has impressed early-on this season and managed to score during the Foxes’ victory over Burnley.

The 30-year-old Manchester United defender spent the whole of last season on loan at Roma and made 37 appearances for the Serie A side in all competitions.

Roma are close to signing Chris Smalling on a permanent deal from Manchester United, according to a report from Sky Sports.

The Serie A side are currently locked in negotiations with United over the potential transfer fee of the 30-year-old centre-back, having seen their first offer of £11m for the former England international rejected by the Old Trafford outfit.

Smalling spent the 2019/20 season in the Italian capital and made 37 appearances for Paulo Fonseca’s side in all competitions. The Roma manager has made it clear that he was happy with the defender’s performances last term and wants him in his side for the 2020/21 season.

The 30-year-old centre-back returned to Old Trafford earlier this summer but is yet to feature for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side this term. He is reportedly training on his own after being left out of their first three matches in the Premier League.

The 31-year-old Wales international, who joined Spurs on a season-long loan last month, is yet to make his first appearance for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Gareth Bale has returned to training to hand Tottenham major injury boost ahead of their Europa League clash against Maccabi Haifa later today, per Daily Mail.

The Welsh forward is yet to make his first appearance for Jose Mourinho’s side since joining them on a season-long loan last month, but seems to have stepped up his recovery from the knee injury he picked up while playing for his national team.

His return to match fitness might take some time and it might be after the international break that Bale makes his second Premier League debut, with Mourinho confirming that the Welshman would watch his side’s Sunday’s game against Manchester United from the sidelines.

But the Portuguese manager is hopeful that the pacey winger will be available for selection for his side’s clash with London rivals West Ham after the international break.
