It’s also not a big surprise that only one English player has made it to the squad given the domination of the competition by the Spanish teams in the last two decades.
The compilation process for the ‘Ultimate X’ involved European football bosses picking the players who have earned the most ‘Team of the Year’ nominations since the vote started in 2001.
UEFA revealed the all-time Champions League XI just a few days before announcing the nominees for the 2019 Team of the Year in late November 2019.Lionel Messi, who has won the Champions League four times with FC Barcelona, spearheads the all-time XI selected by the European football managers.
The Argentine is joined in the attack by ex-Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been part of the ‘Team of the Year’ a record 13 times in his career.
Ronaldo has won the Champions League a record five times in his career, once with Manchester United and the remaining four times with Real Madrid.
Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, who was nominated three times in the Team of the Year, is the only Englishman who has been able to make it to the list.
The Rangers FC manager, who led Liverpool to two Champions League finals, is joined in the midfield by another former Premier League midfielder Thierry Henry.Iker Casillas, the former Real Madrid shot-stopper who won six Team of the Year nominations, is in the goal of the all-time Champions League XI.
His former teammate Sergio Ramos, who has been selected eight times, is joined at the back by Barca center back Pique (five), and ex-Barca center-back Puyol (six).
The four-man defense is completed with the addition of ex-Bayern full-back Philip Lahm who earned five selections in Team of the Year during his trophy-laden career with the Bavarians. Lahm is the only German player to be included in the squad.
Barcelona legends Andres Iniesta (six) and Xavi Hernandez (five) complete the Champions League all-time XI which contains six Spain World Cup winners.
