N’Golo Kante scored the only goal of the night as France beat defending champions Portugal to book their place in the finals.

Paul Pogba was the only player who kept his place from the friendly defeat against Finland as Didier Deschamps made 10 changes against the defending UEFA Nations League Champions Portugal. Whereas, Ronaldo who came on as a substitute in a 7-0 win over Andorra, named in the starting XI.

The first half ended on level terms as Rui Patricio made three splendid saves including a close-range shot from Anthony Martial.

However, in the 53rd-minute Wolves goalkeeper failed to clear Adrien Rabiot’s shot which fell kindly for Chelsea midfielder Kante, who slotted home from the point-blank range. Portugal did create goal-scoring opportunities but lack of ruthlessness in the final third cost Fernando Santos’ men a place in the final.

Saturday’s 1-0 win means that World Champions go top of Group A3 with 13 points while defending UEFA Nations League champions remain second with 10. France will host Sweden in the final match of Group stage while Portugal will travel to Croatia for the final meeting.

Chelsea forward Timo Werner scored twice as Germany go top of Group A4 with a comfortable 3-1 win over Ukraine.

Joachim Low looked concerned when Roman Yaremchuk exquisite volley put Ukraine ahead inside 12 minutes, however, Bayern winger Leroy Sane’s inch-perfect finish restored parity midway through the second half.

Leon Goretzka, who set up Sane for Germany’s first goal, assisted Timo Werner after the half-hour mark as former RB Leipzig’s striker put the home side ahead from a point-blank range header.

Then after the hour-mark, Werner put the result beyond any doubt with a deflected shot from Ginter’s pass. Ukraine, who are battling relegation, couldn’t make most of their chances as Marlos and Oleksandr Zinchenko hit the post in the second half.

Spain’s draw against Switzerland means that DFB only needs a point against Luis Enrique’s men at Sevilla on Wednesday to top the group and qualify for the next round of UEFA Nations League.

Real Madrid captain missed two penalties as Spain managed a late equalizer against Switzerland at St. Jakob-Park.

Sergio Ramos, who became the most capped male player with 177th appearance for Spain overtaking Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon, had a night to forget against Swiss side in the Nations League.

The 34-year-old missed the first penalty in 57th-minute as Yann Sommer held his nerves, and then in the 80th-minute, Ramos’ attempted chip from the spot-kick was intelligently held by Swiss goalie.

Remo Freuler’s first-half strike destined to be the winner for Switzerland, but Gerard Moreno had other ideas as Villarreal striker buried Sergio Reguilon’s cross and salvaged a point for Luis Enrique’s men in the 89th-minute.

Despite two missed penalties, Spain boss backed his team’s captain with these comments: “Sergio’s numbers for penalties are out of this world. If there had been a third penalty, he would have taken that one as well.”
