UEFA set to suspend both Champions League and Europa League amid coronavirus fears
Five Europa League fixtures are scheduled to take place later today

The report has come less than an hour after La Liga suspended the Spanish top-flight for two weeks, and Real Madrid players were told to go into a coronavirus quarantine.

UEFA is set to announce the immediate suspension of the Champions League as well as the Europa League, according to a report by Marca .

The Spanish news publication’s report has come less than an hour after La Liga announced that it was suspending the Spanish top-flight for two weeks.

That news was preceded by Real Madrid telling its players to isolate themselves at home after one of the club’s basketball players were tested positive with coronavirus.

Serie A has already suspended all the Italian football leagues for one month and Ligue 1, as well as the Bundesliga, have instructed teams to play their matches behind closed doors.

The report further claims that the announcement that will confirm the suspension of both the competitions is expected in the next few hours.

If UEFA announces the decision as is claimed in the report, it will throw the world of football into further disarray as several Europa League ties are scheduled to take place later today.

Europa League has already been disrupted by the spread of COVID-19 as Inter Milan , who reside in that region of Italy which is one of the most affected by the virus, saw their game with Turkish outfit Istanbul Baskasehir postponed due to the pandemic.

Spanish side Sevilla were also scheduled to host Serie A outfit Roma in their R16 clash of this season’s Europa League today. That match has also been postponed to a later date after the Spanish government enacted a ban on mass gatherings in the country earlier this week.

According to a statement put out by DFL CEO Christian Seifert earlier this week, the German top-flight season will conclude despite the outbreak of the virus in the country.

Similar to other leagues from across Europe, Bundesliga needs to conclude to confirm promotion and relegation spots, determine champions of the ongoing season and find out the qualifiers for next season’s European competitions.

His recommendations were followed by Red Bull Leipzig during their 3-0 defeat of Premier League side Tottenham in the second leg of the sides’ R16 Champions League clash on Tuesday. The Red Bull Arena hosted the game behind closed doors as no spectator was allowed inside the stadium.

As it stands, English Premier League is the only top-flight across the continent which will not only see its sides lock horns with each other at the weekend but will also allow match goers to enter the stadium and see their side play.
