‘Wenger should get Emirates statue’, Leno stresses Mesut Özil importance and more

Two former Gunners have praised the Frenchman’s impact during his 22-year stay at London, even going as far as suggesting that he deserves his own statue in front of Arsenal’s home ground.

Arsenal club legends Ray Parlour caught up Martin Keown and both discussed Arsene Wenger in their Daily Mail interview. The legendary Frenchman led Arsenal to three Premier League titles and seven FA Cup trophies before deciding to call time on an illustrious coaching career.

Two of his former protégés recalled the time spent with Wenger, emphasizing the role he played in establishing Arsenal as a domestic and European force. “Before he came in, we were poor in the Premier League. Before you knew it, we had won the league three times,” said Keown.

“I’d even dare to say that he deserves to be immortalized with his own statue in front of the Emirates. After all, he’s the one who made the new ground possible! He was a visionary.”

Top News 2: Leno defends 'amazing' Ozil amid constant criticism

Arsenal’s German goalkeeper leaped to Ozil’s defence, stating that the criticism the playmaker receives on a daily basis is totally unwarranted, instead focusing on his creative ability.

Mesut Ozil joined Arsenal’s ranks in 2013, making the move from Real Madrid in a five-year deal worth £42.5 million (€50 million), becoming the most expensive German football player of all time.

He has since made 184 Premier League appearances, scoring 33 goals while assisting many more but has seen his performances dip and his attitude is regularly questioned by many Arsenal faithful, while he has also fallen out with the German FA.

His compatriot and club teammate Bernd Leno still has belief in the mercurial playmaker and his abilities, saying that you have to look beyond the numbers and statistics when analyzing Ozil’s influence on the game. “Have you seen his passing? It’s unbelievable. His vision and his skills allow him to find teammates with ease and he may not have as much assists now, but his importance cannot be underestimated.”

Top News 3: Mbappe thinks Ben Yedder also deserves Ligue 1 recognition

The young World Cup winner has voiced his opinion receiving this season’s Ligue 1 Golden Boot for his goalscoring exploits for Paris Saint-Germain.

The Frenchman continued his fine form in front of goal this season as well, before the LFP (Ligue de Football Professionnel) decided to call an end to Ligue 1 and announce PSG as league champions for the third year running.

Kylian Mbappe was joint top-scorer in the French top flight with Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder, with both forwards amassing a tally of 18 goals. Mbappe was the one who received the accolade though, having scored all of his goals from open play, whereas Ben Yedder had three penalties.

While expressing his gratitude on receiving this recognition, he stated that Ben Yedder is also deserving of the prize, pointing out the English Premier League’s handling of the exact situation last year as an example, when they split the Golden Boot between Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.

“I am very grateful for all the messages I have received, but I have to mention that Wissam also deserves to receive the trophy as much as I do, like the Premier League did the previous season,” he wrote on Twitter.
