Why Barcelona are desperate to offload Philippe Coutinho in January

The 28-year-old Brazil international joined the Camp Nou outfit in a £142m move from Liverpool in 2018 January transfer window.

Barcelona are eager to offload Philippe Coutinho in the January transfer window to avoid paying his former club Liverpool more millions in contract related clauses, per Mirror Football.

Coutinho left Liverpool against the advice of their manager Jurgen Klopp in January 2018 and has went on to become a bit-part figure at the Camp Nou. He was unable to perform at his best in his first 18 months in Spain and was consequently loaned out to Bayern Munich.

His season-long stay at Bayern helped Coutinho clinch the treble of Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB-Pokal, with the midfielder also scoring against his former side in Bayern’s 8-2 humiliation of Barca in the Champions League final.

While Hansi Flick’s side had the opportunity to turn his loan stay into a permanent deal, they opted against it and Coutinho returned to Spain. The player’s form since his return in Barcelona has been anything but unspectacular and has contributed to the club’s desire of offloading him next month.
