The 2018/19 Premier League champions were slapped with a two-season Champions League ban before they got it overturned on appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Manchester City’s two-season Champions League ban was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport because most of the alleged breaches were ‘either not established or time-barred’, revealed the CAS in its detailed judgment of 92 pages released Tuesday.
Pep Guardiola’s men were initially barred from playing in the Champions League for two years after UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body found them guilty of concealing equity funding. The 2018/19 Premier League champions were also slapped with a monetary fine.
The allegations were first aired by German newspaper Der Spiegel. It had published leaked documents back in November 2018 that claimed to show that City inflated the value of one-specific sponsorship deal to bypass Financial Fair Play regulations.
City to their credit were adamant of day one that they had done nothing wrong and immediately stated after February’s ban their decision to challenge it in CAS. The 92-page final decision states that the Citizens sent nine layers to their appeal case.
Manchester United have decided to cool their interest in long-term transfer target Jack Grealish, with Sky Sports claiming that the Red Devils are unwilling to meet Villa’s valuation of the midfielder.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly a big fan of the England international who played an important part in helping the Villans stay in the Premier League for another season. Grealish scored 8 and assisted 6 goals to help Dean Smith’s side escape relegation.
However, with Villa surviving the drop courtesy of a point that they got away at West Ham on the final day of the season, it has allowed the Birmingham-based football club to reevaluate and increase the price they’re going to ask for the 24-year-old.
It is this realization that has reportedly convinced the Red Devils to cool their interest in Grealish and focus on securing the signature of Jadon Sancho. The Borussia Dortmund winger is keen to leave Bundesliga and his side want the winger’s future sorted by August 10.
Quique Setien’s side need a goalless draw or victory in their 2nd leg of the Champions League’s last-16 clash with Napoli to qualify for the next round.
Forwards Antoine Griezmann and Ousmanne Dembele both returned to Barcelona training on Tuesday to hand the club a double injury boost ahead of the restart of the Champions League.
The French World Cup winning duo sat out the final few weeks of the season due to injuries and underwent surgeries before doing individual recovery work on their way to rehabilitation.
Griezmann suffered a thigh problem during Barcelona’s 1-0 victory over Real Valladolid earlier this month and subsequently missed the final two games of the season.
Dembele, meanwhile, has the extension of the 2019/20 season to thank for his return to the pitch as the surgery he underwent in February would have ended the season for the former Borussia Dortmund winger in normal circumstances.
