Why Chelsea stars are refusing pay-cuts, Arsenal back in training amid strict rules and more

The Blues had issued a statement yesterday claiming that while the club had been unable to reach a pay-cut agreement with the players, negotiations were still ongoing.

Chelsea players are refusing to agree to the club’s proposal that they agree to 30 percent wage-cuts because they feel pressurized into it, reports Daily Mail.

The report further claims that the Blues’ first-team squad had agreed in a players-only meeting that they’d take 10 percent wage cuts amid the coronavirus crisis. However, the Chelsea board was never presented with the offer and now the players are exploring the option of wage deferral.

While a wage deferral would allow the players to recoup the wages they’d be giving away, a wage cut means that the losses will be permanent. That realization has led several members of the Blues squad to give the former proposition a serious consideration.

The idea of wage deferral may have been planted in the minds of Blues’ players by the example Arsenal have followed in convincing their players to agree to 12.5 percent wage cuts. The Gunners have assured their squad members that they’d be able to recoup their losses based on future performances.

Alongside reigning Premier League champions Manchester City, the Gunners have been under a lockdown for a longer period than other teams in the English top-flight.

Nearly 50 days after they went into self-isolation, Arsenal players are due to return to training today at the club’s 10-pitch Hertfordshire complex in Colney.

Their return to training is voluntary but it is expected that the majority of the squad, including the wage-cut rebel Mesut Ozil, will turn up. The players have been told by the club that to deter fans from gathering outside the training complex, they shouldn’t stop to speak or pose for selfies with them.

Strict coronavirus isolation rules will be enforced including the condition that players will travel alone to the training ground and only five will be allowed to train at one time. The buildings will remain locked so the players will have to arrive in kit after showering and changing into it at home.

Players are banned from socializing with each other and the training will be divided into one-hour sessions throughout the day. The medical and fitness staff will oversee the players from afar and each player will be assigned their own football to prevent cross-contamination.

After months of speculation about whether Chelsea would offer the Brazilian a new contract, it seems he might end up moving to Arsenal as a free agent in the summer.

According to ESPN, Arsenal are favorites to sign the soon to be out-of-contract Chelsea midfielder Willian in the summer transfer window once his deal with the Blues expires.

The 31-year-old has repeatedly indicated his desire to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge but the club is yet to offer him a new contract.

Willian’s desire to continue to live in London might end up playing a key role in convincing him in signing for the Gunners who are cash-strapped after facing the double whammy of coronavirus crisis and the potential absence of European football next season.
