Why Frank Lampard needs to drop misfiring Timo Werner

Since his £47.5million move from RB Leipzig over the summer, the 24-year-old has scored 8 goals in 20 appearances for Chelsea.

Timo Werner’s poor form in front of goal must be enough to convince Frank Lampard to drop the Germany international against West Ham at the weekend.

Werner arrived at Stamford Bridge amid much fanfare in the summer following his terrific four-year stint with Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig. The 24-year-old came off age in Germany and was able to manage 78 goals in 127 appearances for Die Roten Bullen.

However, while his form for Julian Nagelsmann’s side was enough to justify the 47.5m release clause which Chelsea activated in the summer, it has so far been invisible as Werner tries to make his presence count in the English top-flight.

Lampard has stuck with his striker through thick-and-thin but the 24-year-old has so far been unable to repay the trust of his manager. His average form at Stamford Bridge was once again visible at the weekend as Werner fired a blank during the Blues 2-1 defeat at Wolves.

And it isn’t only his lack of killing touch that may disappoint his manager. Werner’s inclination to give too many balls away, and his poor off-the-ball work, has also been frustrating for his manager, as evidenced by his reaction to the striker’s lack of pressing in the final stages at the Molineux.

With West Ham visiting Stamford Bridge at the weekend – a fixture which Chelsea are expected to coast through, the time is now right for Lampard to bench the forward. Doing so would be akin to taking Werner out of the firing line and help him prepare mentally for next week’s big clash with Arsenal.
