Provided Leicester decide to sanction the move of their left-back to Chelsea, it will result in a merry go round that will trigger multiple moves across the Premier League.
Just like last summer when the £80m move of their defender Harry Maguire to Manchester United sparked a number of high-profile deals and set a barometer for other transfers, Leicester City once again hold the key to the 2020 summer transfer window.
Ben Chilwell, the highly-rated Foxes left-back, has been on the transfer radar of Chelsea. Frank Lampard’s side have been the key admirers of the England international and want him to replace the likes of Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso at the club.
The only thing that stands between them and Chilwell is Leicester’s £60m valuation of the full-back. Chelsea are reportedly adamant that such a price tag is astronomical in the post-COVID-19 world in which the price tags of players are sure to nosedive.
Brendan Rodgers outfit, meanwhile, still remember how they forced United to make Maguire the most expensive defender in football’s history. The resulting impasse between both clubs, however, isn’t as severe as it seems, which is why Chilwell is all expected to play for Stamford Bridge outfit next season.
Brendan Rodgers is reportedly eyeing Kieran Tierney as his favorite signing if the Foxes end up losing Ben Chilwell to Chelsea.
The 23-year-old full back played for three seasons under Rodgers and one of the stand-out players of the Celtic side that won three successive titles during that period.
Rodgers’ successful stint at King Power Stadium combined with the torrid time Tierney is enduring at the Emirates has convinced many naysayers that the young full-back won’t reject the chance of joining his forces with his former manager if the chance arises.
Provided Mikel Arteta decides it is too soon to give up on Tierney, that might convince Brendan Rodgers to turn his attention toward the South Coast.
Southampton full-back Ryan Bertrand is reportedly Leicester City’s 2nd choice replacement of Ben Chilwell if they fail to land Kieran Tierney from Arsenal.
The former Chelsea full-back, who spent nine seasons as a Chelsea player but made only 28 appearances for the Blues, has been a regular under Ralph Van Hassenhuttl at the Saints.
He has made 197 appearances for the South Coast club during his four-year stint at the St. Mary’s stadium, scoring 7 goals in the process.
But given the fact that he will be turning 31 in August, his signing would be a remarkable step-down for Leicester who will be replacing him with a 23-year-old Chilwell.
