Why Man Utd didn’t sign anyone in January transfer window

  • Man Utd didn’t sign any player in January because they have already lined up four signings for the summer
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had a quiet transfer window even though teams around them in the table brought in new faces
  • Reigning Premier League champions completed the double signing of centre-backs Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies on the transfer deadline day

Manchester United didn’t sign any player in the January transfer window because the club has plans to shake up the squad in the summer.

Ligalive reported in the middle of December that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were planning to have a quiet transfer window, regardless of the transfer strategy adopted by teams around them in the Premier League table.

That decision was taken despite the fact that United didn’t have an above-average summer transfer window before the start of last season. The Red Devils missed out on Jadon Sancho even though they chased him for months and missed several other key targets as well.

The club’s hierarchy is reportedly of the opinion the current Man Utd squad has what it takes to compete in three competitions. United, it is to be remembered, will be playing in the Europa League later this month and have already qualified for the 5th round of FA Cup by defeating Liverpool.

Did Man Utd miss a trick by not signing anyone in January?

A case could be made for United missing the trick by not bringing in anyone last month. Especially because the club currently finds itself in the title race and could have increased its chances of going all the way by bringing in new faces this month.

Sure, the Red Devils haven’t been dealing with the sort of injury crisis that has ravaged Liverpool’s defensive department this season. But the arrival of new players could still have given Solskjaer the opportunity to rotate his starting XI in the business end of the season.
