Since joining Frank Lampard’s side from RB Leipzig in the summer, the Germany international has only four goals in 16 Premier League appearances.
Timo Werner is struggling for goals at Chelsea because he is not being played in the position where he excelled in during his time at RB Leipzig.
The Germany international joined Frank Lampard’s side amid much fanfare in the summer after four highly-successful seasons with Leipzig, during which the 24-year-old scored 78 goals in only 127 Bundesliga appearances for Die Roten Bulen.
However, the goals seemed to have dried up since Werner decided against a move to Liverpool in favor of a transfer to the Stamford Bridge outfit. During his first 16 Premier League appearances, Werner has found the back of the net only 4 times, with the last of those four goals coming in November.
And if football analyst Max Bergmann is to be believed, it is the difference between the position where he played at Leipzig (striker) and he occupies currently at Chelsea (winger) that has led to Werner’s goal-scoring numbers going South during his time in England.
Ironically, one of the reasons why Werner didn’t go to Liverpool and ended up moving to London was reportedly the forward’s concerns that, with Roberto Firmino already well-established at the club, he won’t be getting much game time for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Perhaps Wenger failed to grasp that while it was the competition or places at Liverpool that could keep him out of the squad, he would at least be playing in his favorite role, as a striker. That hasn’t been the case at Chelsea though, where the presence of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud has forced Lampard to field the German on the left wing.
