Will Atletico Madrid win La Liga? Two reasons why it may not happen
Ligalive has looked at two specific reasons why Atletico Madrid might not win the La Liga title in the ongoing 2020/21 campaign.
- The race for the 2020/21 La Liga title race is expected to go right down to the wire in the remaining weeks of the campaign
- Atletico Madrid might have slipped up in recent weeks but still maintain a four-point lead over 2nd-placed Barcelona
- Real Madrid, who are currently sitting at third in the table, are only six points behind leaders Rojiblancos
Here are two reasons why Atletico Madrid will not win La Liga title this season:
Lionel Messi is in the form of his life
Even when compared with the astounding standards he has set for himself over the last two decades, Messi’s form during the past few months is staggering.
The Argentina international has scored a goal or assisted one to his teammates in each of his last 16 outings for Barcelona in all competitions.
Messi has scored 20 goals during that time and assisted another 8 to his teammates, meaning he’s averaging almost 2 goal contributions per game.
All of this is to say that Diego Simeone does have many sleepless nights ahead of him as his fellow Argentine won’t let Atleti walk away with the title.
Real Madrid have dealt with the worst of their injury crisis
Los Blancos might be sitting six points behind their city rivals but they have managed that despite dealing with the worst injury crisis in the club’s recent history.
One could gauge the veracity of this claim by the Madrid team news ahead of Zinedine Zidane’s side’s clash with Real Sociedad at the end of last month.
The Santiago Bernabeu outfit had only 11 fit senior outfield players for that clash, with the likes of Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos, Eden Hazard, Eder Militato, Dani Carjaval, Fede Valverde, Alvaro Odriozola and Rodrygo Goes all out injured.
That Los Blancos faced such a crisis and still didn’t allow it to derail their La Liga title challenge is an indicator that alongside Barcelona, they are ready to challenge for the Spanish top-flight’s title until the final day of this season.
