Rafael Benitez has no intentions of making a return to Newcastle United under the club’s current regime, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.
Current Magpies manager Steve Bruce is under a lot of pressure after his side’s dismal form has left them dropping perilously close to relegation places
Newcastle have lost three of their last four games in the Premier League and currently find themselves only three points and 1-place above 18th placed Fulham.
The main reason why the Magpies are now battling relegation has to do with the club’s inability to turn draws into wins. They have lost fewer games (4) than any other side in the bottom half of the table but it is their draws (14 in 25 games) that have prevented Newcastle from rising up the table.
Consequently, with the club unable to make the most of the attacking talent at its disposal, pressure has grown on their manager on recent weeks, with rumors claiming that Rafa would return to St. James Park whenever his successor is shown the door.
Guillem Balague: Rafael Benitez won’t return to Newcastle under current regime
“Is there a project with Mike Ashley? Is there a plan? Is there intention to actually spend money on the academy and the facilities and in the squad? If the answer is no, then you’ve got the answer for Rafa Benitez if he ever was approached again. But he hasn’t, and it is a no.”
That statement by Balague shouldn’t come as a surprise. Rafa left Newcastle under acrimonious circumstances in 2019, only two years after he had led the club back to the Premier League. He’d thus be in no hurry to return to Newcastle.
