Ligalive looks at the preview, team news, starting lineups, stats and prediction ahead of the Everton Vs Liverpool clash on Sunday in the Premier League.
Arsenal to the sword four days ago, but a victory against Everton will leave them just three-points short of the Holy Grail.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were, curiously, in a bad form before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the suspension of football in March. They had lost four of their last six games before the lockdown, after losing only one of the preceding 37 in all competitions. However, as their German manager expressed in a virtual press conference on Friday, the Reds weren’t happy when the league went into lockdown, as the danger of a once-in-a-century pandemic cruelly voiding the season was all too real for the runaway Premier League leaders.
But with the English top-flight following the lead of its counterparts in Germany and Spain, Liverpool’s title charge is back on track, albeit behind closed doors. The best their Sunday’s opponents Everton can do, then, is to merely delay the date on which the Reds will start the festivities.Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton will be without several of their key stars for Sunday’s Merseyside derby as Fabian Delph and Yerry Mina have joined Theo Walcott and Philippe Gbamin on the sidelines.
Walcott is still more than a month away from recovering his full fitness after having surgery on an abdominal problem, while Gbamin who was already out for long-term will now spend an additional four to five months on the sidelines after suffering an Achilles injury.
Their injury troubles don’t end there for the Toffees as both Delph and Mina have suffered injuries since being allowed to train under the COVID-19 protocols. The defensive duo will also sit out as their teammates try to stop the Liverpool juggernaut on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp was tight-lipped on the chances of Mohamed Salah or Andrew Robertson featuring in the Merseyside derby after they both missed a behind-closed-doors friendly against Blackburn Rovers last week.
Robertson was pictured in the Liverpool squad that trained for the Sunday’s clash on Wednesday but Salah was nowhere to be seen, although Klopp continues to insist that the Reds have no player that is unavailable for the Merseyside derby.Coming into this Sunday’s clash against their local rivals, Liverpool will be comforted with the knowledge that they have lost none of their last 21 games against Everton in all competitions.
That isn’t to suggest that the Blues should down their tools before kicking the first ball, especially when they have held the Reds to a draw in 6 out of the last 7 games between both sides at the Goodison.
Their side’s convincing home form prior to the lockdown, which saw them going undefeated in their last 7 Premier League games, might also be enough for the Toffees faithful to believe that their side could delay the inevitable coronation of their neighbors.Everton probable lineup vs Liverpool: Pickford; Sidibe, Keane, Holgate, Digne; Bernard, Gomes, Dvies, Sigurdsson; Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison
Liverpool probable lineup vs Everton: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum; Origi, Firmino, Mane
Prediction: A 2-0 victory for Liverpool.
