Which five Rangers players broke COVID-19 lockdown rules? Steven Gerrard names the rule-breakers

Reports over the past few days had claimed that at least four Rangers players were under investigation over breaking COVID-19 rules by attending a party.

  • Steven Gerrard has confirmed five Rangers players broke coronavirus lockdown rules last Saturday
  • The breach happened after Rangers strengthened their grip over the top of Scottish Premiership with a 1-0 win over Kilmarnock on the same day
  • All five players went to attend a party which broke national COVID-19 rules and were issued police fines for their transgression

Steven Gerrard has confirmed five Rangers players broke Scotland’s COVID-19 lockdown rules after the side’s 1-0 victory over Kilmarnock last Saturday.

The Liverpool legend also confirmed that the Scottish Premiership leaders are in contact with the Scottish Government and Scottish FA over the incident.

He further claimed that the quintet has been removed from the Rangers squad, raising doubts over whether any of the five will feature against Antwerp in the Europa League R-16 first leg on Friday.

What happened?

The Rangers’ boss admission has come only days after The Athletic reported that the Scottish leaders were internally investigating at least four players for breaking COVID-19 rules.

All of them were allegedly attending a house party following their side’s 1-0 victory over fellow Scottish side Kilmarnock on Saturday. The police were called on the scene and many of those at the party were handed hefty fines.

Rangers then launched an internal club investigation after it emerged that out of the 10 people who were at the party, half of them were members of their squad.

Who are the rule-breakers?

The five players who broke the rules have been confirmed as defensive midfielder Bongani Zungu, defenders Nathan Peterson and Calvin Bassey, goalkeeper Brian Kinnear and Dapo Muebude (currently serving a loan spell at Queen of the South).

Gerrard claims that he feels ‘personally let down’ by the rule breakers and says all five are currently self-isolating after being removed from the squad.
